SIBO stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth.

What this means is that your Migrating Motor Complex (I will continue to reference this as your MMC) but also known as your peristalsis (what gets your poop moving through your intestines and out your bum!) has stopped working. You may have other causes such as abdominal adhesion's which may not be affecting the MMC's but is prohibiting the movement of food and bacteria out of the small intestine and into the large intestine.

As a result, food stagnates in the small intestine and bacteria feed off the fibers and carbohydrates from your diet and produce unpleasant gasses such as Hydrogen and Methane. Hydrogen dominant individuals will likely have diarrhea or mixed diarrhea and constipation. The Methane folks will have constipation. These gases cause a host of unpleasant side effects, damage the villi of the small intestine and leads to leaky-gut disorder and may eventually lead to systemic inflammation and even Autoimmune Diseases.

Causes of SIBO:

Food poisoning, hypochondria (low stomach acid), a sluggish liver and dysfunctional gallbladder, abdominal adhesion's drug and alcohol use, diabetes, hypothyroidism, Crohns, Celiac, brain injury, cancer treatments, chronic use of NSAIDS and Morphine also could have gotten you here. What got you there is a rabbit hole that only we could work through together - if you were my client.

Why did your MMC’s stop working?

While there are a few causes for this issue, the leading cause are antibodies that form as a result from food poisoning which paralyze the MMC. This is now viewed as a type of Autoimmune condition. Statistically 1 in 9 persons who get food poisoning will develop this form of SIBO called Post-Infectious IBS. It is primarily the diarrhea or mixed diarrhea/constipation people that will be effected by these antibodies. While not impossible, it's rare for it to be the cause for people who only have Methane SIBO - constipation.

You can test for these antibodies by ordering a blood test from - affordable and super easy. It saves people a lot of time and money ordering tests. If we know you have the antibodies, we take the guess work out of what is going on with you and we go strait to clearing SIBO and working out a long-term plan for this

Auto-immune type of SIBO.

Symptoms of SIBO:

Bloating, intestinal gas/belching, stomach cramps, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea and/or constipation, fatigue, brain fog, depression, anxiety, food intolerance, fat malabsorption, nutritional deficiencies (especially iron & B12) weight gain/weight loss.

Secondary Symptoms of SIBO:

Common Complications to having SIBO are food intolerance, allergies, systemic inflammation, cognitive decline/diseases, and autoimmune diseases.

What now?:

If this sounds like you, the first thing we need to do is have you tested for SIBO (ease at-home breath test) and then work out a plan to clear the bacteria, rebuild your digestive system and get it working properly again!
